Kyusu Teapot

The term “急須” (KYUSU) in Japanese originated from the Chinese word “橫柄壺” (héng bǐng hú), which referred to a type of teapot with a horizontal handle that was specifically used for brewing loose-leaf tea.

KYUSU teapots typically feature a sideways handle, with the spout and handle forming a right angle, making it convenient for the user to pour the tea with their right hand.

The KYUSU teapot has its roots in the Tang Dynasty of China. In the past, it was known as a “橫把壺” (héng bǎ hú) or “horizontal handle teapot.” However, as tea-drinking customs in China evolved, it fell out of popularity. Nevertheless, it found great acclaim and development in Japan.
